Product Description

This is our JD Crowe thumb pick in a size medium. This pick was designed by JD Crowe and constructed to his very exacting specifications. The BCT-JDL is the exact pick that JD uses. The pick bears JD's initials on the inside between the rivets. It is constructed using a custom designed stainless steel band and a 50/1000 of an inch(1.25mm) thick BlueChip pick. These picks are laser etched, professionally machined, and hand beveled to create the best thumb pick available.

Size compares to a standard medium thumb pick of any brand.

  1. Only rated 5 stars because 10 wasn't an option 5 Star Review

These offer total comfort for as long as you wish to keep them on, and the harder you pick, the more they seem to tighten. Also, the material used in the plastic part of the pick, produces maximum tone without any scratching, and they slip off the strings unlike anything I've ever experienced before. I've been searching for these for over 50 years!

I've been using Bluechip thumbpicks playing banjo for a while. The JD Crowe pick is comfortable and stays in place and it does produce a clear tone. Well worth the purchase price. Rick Denning "Kinetic Grass "

  3. Because I Can 4 Star Review

Posted by on 23rd Sep 2016

The best playing thumbpick ever seems to go with the most expensive ever. I'm on my 4th one. Yes, the tips DO wear, albeit about 10 times slower than any conventional plastic thumbpick. I have sent two of them after heavy use to Bluechip. They politely polished the tips back to original shape leaving the pick only slightly shorter than the original. (No, I do not touch the abrasive banjo head with my thumb pick. The wear is simply from draging across the strings.)
Will I continue buying them? Yes!
Why? Right now, "Because I Can!"
And they DO play really nice!

  4. hesitant at first, then I fell headfirst into the blue-chip swimming pool 5 Star Review

I was very hesitant on spending $40 for a thumb pick, but once I used it I have grown to like it very much. The design of the pick is very well put together and it is very sturdy. It has increased my playing speed and it fits a lot more comfortable on my thimb. I play a lot of shows outdoors and those plastic thumb picks want to slide around on my thumb on those hot Days and I have to change them periodically. But with the blue-chip pick, it stays where I put it . Great product . Now if you guys can come up with a finger pick that stays where you put it I will be set. But remember you have to give me a discount for giving you the idea ha ha

  6. Awesome 5 Star Review

Posted by on 1st Apr 2016

I tried several thumb picks and this one just dramatically increased the overall tone of my banjo. Well balanced, punchy with a lot more of basses.
It fits my thumb comfortably and it seems to be built to last.
I'm so happy with it I just ordered another one so I do not have to worry too much about loosing it !

It stays securely in place, which was exactly what I was looking for.

  8. Yes! 5 Star Review

I’m loving the custom JD thumb picks (5/32" shorter than regular)! They're the perfect length for me and you cannot beat the comfort and tone they provide. I’ll be coming back for more when needed.

  9. Getting Closer 4 Star Review

Posted by on 8th Feb 2016

    Not perfect, but close!

I had to modify my blade and band. The blade is not correct for electric and acoustic style. I rounded the blade and put a speed bevel on it. Plays pretty good now. I like the solid tone and the glide. The band is a little tricky. It all depends on my thumb swelling because of heat or sodium intake. Once positioned though, it becomes very comfortable and fun to use. I've been playing finger style for 30 yrs+ & have experienced many thumb picks and would say the Blue Chip is in the top 3. I would like to try the Reso/Dobro because of the 60/1000 blade. I like the Tp1r 60 and think maybe the rest/dobro with the 60/1000 blade would make me smile more.

    Best Regards,
    Lance...
