Product Overview

This is our JD Crowe thumb pick in a size large. This pick was designed by JD Crowe and constructed to his very exacting specifications. The BCT-JDL is the exact pick that JD uses. The pick bears JD's initials on the inside between the rivets. It is constructed using a custom designed stainless steel band and a 50/1000 of an inch(1.25mm) thick BlueChip pick. These picks are laser etched, professionally machined, and hand beveled to create the best thumb pick available.

Size compares to a standard large thumb pick of any brand.

It’s the the best you can buy

Posted by Ron in NC on 6th Jul 2026

So, living in NC, the unofficial rule is Hound dog, Pickup Truck, Banjo: Pick two. I have a Jeep, so I got the dog and the banjo. Used to play the metal Dunlop thumb picks because the Nationals just didn’t fit tight enough, got stuck in the strings, and were too long (head strikes). The Dunlop was my solution for about 40 years, until I found this. To be honest, there’s no way I would have spent $40 on a thumb pick even 20 years ago. But, this one is quite worth it. It fits great, and it hits the strings exactly where I intend to, and with almost no thought. It could probably be 1/16 in. shorter (I do get occasional head strikes on very fast breakdowns) but the speed and especially the tone are fantastic. The difference from the metal Dunlop is a 100% difference in tone. I bought a second one as a backup when my jamming bud commented, “you only have one of those?” Oh, sh*t. So, now I have two.

Been playing for over forty years trying all sorts of picks to improve tone and attack. This pick makes an unbelievable difference. Amazing.

    Love the Pic

This is my second Blur Chip pic. There is no comparable pic out there that I know of. The sound is perfect and the comfort is the main selling point. I can were it for hours with not pain. I was a bit disappointed in the lack of communication on the order. I heard nothing for a couple weeks. Even after I emailed and messaged for an order status. Finally I received a notice that it shipped. But the Pic is awesome and I will order again.

Been a banjo player since 1994, have tried literally every kind of thumb pick there is and kept going back to the national large picks, when blue chip came out with a thumb pick to be honest I wasn’t impressed with their first try on a thumb pick and kinda upset that I paid that kind of price for a pick, but neighbor when they came out with this one and it had the legendary JD Crowe’s name tied to it I had to give it a try, and I’m glad I did. It is durable ( duh it’s metal), comfortable, light and finally I don’t have to hang three of them on my banjo hooks. The JD Crowe model is exactly what I’ve been looking for in a thumb pick for years and boy did the folks at Blue Chip deliver. I’m excited and expecting it to last for a long time….Hands down the best thumb pick I’ve ever used, kudos Blue Chip you’ve done well!!!

My new go to thumb pick

Posted by Kerry on 24th Aug 2025

Long lasting, well fitting, dynamic sounding and oh yes, expensive. I have used your thumb picks now for about 5 years and I'm on my second one. I won't let anyone use it and I'm not going to loose it.

    Good when it was good.

I enjoyed using the thumbpick and even got pretty used to it on my finger, more so than with other picks. It played and sounded great until it snapped in half during a show after a few months of use. The company had me ship it back to them to replace the blade, and it broke again after a few months of getting it back with the new blade. They offered to replace the blade if I paid for shipping again, but I didn't think it was worth it. I am pretty disappointed. I had heard so many good things and was really looking forward to not having to replace my picks as much. I enjoyed the little time I had with this pick, and haven't had any problems with the regular flat pick.

Didn't accomplish my purpose. I sent them back and hopefully changes will accomplish my goal.
