Product Description

The CT55 is a pick custom designed by Chris Thile for his personal use. It is very similar in size and shape to our TAD line of picks. However it is only manufactured in 55/1000 of an inch(1.4mm) thickness and has a custom bevel per his specifications. This is the exact pick that Chris Thile is currently using. See his thoughts on this pick on our users page.

Quarters, Nickels and Dimes, if included in the pictures, are for size reference only. They are not etched on the picks or included with the sale. To use this reference, please place a coin on your current non-Bluechip pick and then compare to the pictures of our picks with coins on top of them. This will help you choose the pick that is closest to your current favorite size and shape.

  1. Eureka, Finally a Pick I Love! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 19th Dec 2022

I have tried several pick types - Wegen and other less expensive brands. None felt right to me. I met someone at a festival who had a Blue Chip. Instantly I could tell we were meant to be. It didn’t slip like so many others and the sound it made was more neutral (more volume and less pick noise). Happy to have found a keeper.

  2. great tone and flexibility 5 Star Review

I tired the CT 55 and I really like the "weightyness" of the pick s it feels slightly heavier than other picks of similar thickness.
While I prefer it for my heavier instrumentz -mandola, octave mandolin and mandocello, the tone on any mandolin is strong and loud, with less "clickyness".
Overall a great mandolin pick for any level player.

  3. Superior to all other picks! 5 Star Review

Outstanding in every way--size, shape, feel, grip, playability, and tonal quality. I desire no other pick for mandolin.

  4. simply the bes!! 5 Star Review

What can I say. These are the most amazing picks I’ve ever used. Constant and consistent string grab both down strum and up strum. Been playing on one for years and it shows no sign of wear. I luv these things!!!

  5. Great value. 5 Star Review

This is the second one of these picks I have it chased. They are the right size and weight for my fingers. I have a sack full of other picks that for some reason don’t feel quite right. My playing is always better with these picks. I like that I can have my name put on it so in case it is dropped it can be returned to me.

Always loved using blue chip picks, love the crispness of the CT55, feels completely natural in the hand. Perfect pick!

  7. New to Mandolin 5 Star Review

Posted by on 29th Aug 2022

I bought this because apparently Chris Thile uses it and as a new player I am emulating everything about his playing possible. I’ve compared the TAD 40, which is more agile for me, but doesn’t have the volume, of course. I’ve ordered a TAD 50 to try something in-between the two to see if that hits the spot between volume and agility. In any case, I’ve been using BC picks for guitar for maybe twelve years and think they’re great for sound, playability, and durability in general, and this CT55 is no exception.

I really enjoy the size of this pic, but I’m not sure if the feel/tone is better than my TP 60. Only time will tell.

  10. Worth the dollars! 5 Star Review

Decided to go big and pay the extra bucks for the BlueChip and WOW, I am so glad I did. Really improved my playing and sound.
