Product Overview

The CT55 is a pick custom designed by Chris Thile for his personal use. It is very similar in size and shape to our TAD line of picks. However it is only manufactured in 55/1000 of an inch(1.4mm) thickness and has a custom bevel per his specifications. This is the exact pick that Chris Thile is currently using. See his thoughts on this pick on our users page.

Quarters, Nickels and Dimes, if included in the pictures, are for size reference only. They are not etched on the picks or included with the sale. To use this reference, please place a coin on your current non-Bluechip pick and then compare to the pictures of our picks with coins on top of them. This will help you choose the pick that is closest to your current favorite size and shape.

Thank you Chris Thile and Blue Chip picks for sharing this wonderful pick with me! The tone is round and warm and the action is quick with clear response. I really love it. Thanks again!!

    LOVE MY CT55's!!

Posted by Kevin McConnell on 27th May 2025

Love my CT55 picks! I've been playing with heavy Ultem picks for many years, but recently started using the CT55's after a friend let me try one. While not a HUGE difference, there is DEFINITELY a difference, and as a guitarist, I need all the help I can get! And although on a fixed income now, I WILL replace my Blue Chip picks if I lose them! Single notes are cleaner and clearer, and the tone is more focused!

    End of Searching .

Posted by Michael Tulloch on 13th May 2025

Just now taking up the Mandolin here. And I was having a problem holding the slippery picks I was trying , even the grip styles available. . I tried sanding them with sand paper etc., drilling holes....and not have any luck really . David Benedict suggested I try one of these , and I immediately liked it. Somehow they stay right where I hold them and I don't have to press too hard ....I can relax my hand and wrist and focus on my attack angle , bevel , pick patterns . Initially I had to get over the initial cost , ....that is until I realized they are worth twice the price. I like the CT-55 the best . Like I said , ......the search is over .! Very recommend for the beginner , from this beginner ( 1 month so far ).

Blue Chip CT 55 does not disappoint

Posted by john cole on 13th May 2025

I play a little mandolin and asked my friend who is a fine player what pick she used. She said the BC CT 55 and I immediately ordered one. I received it in about two or three days and have not stopped using it since. The tone it gets is great and it feels very natural in my fingers. Has it improved my picking ? Not sure but I do enjoy using it as I practice so…maybe !

This is the CT 55 with no bevel. Sounds great and makes tremolos easier.

    My First Bluechip

Posted by Unknown on 3rd Apr 2025

I've read a bunch about these on Mandolincafe.com, and I've seen some videos on all the different picks out there. Coming from guitar, I love my cheap Dunlop nylon picks. But, mandolin is something completely different, and I'm SHOCKED how much people would pay for a pick. Honestly I never would have bought a Bluechip if not for the family members that gave me a gift to go out and buy one of those crazy expensive picks. I've got to say - I like it. Until now, on my mandolin, I've played large triangle Dunlop Primetones. This Bluechip is the exact same size as that. I can hear a little difference in the tone, but not much, really. The main difference is the feel in the hand. For some weird reason, the Bluechip feels "warm" in my hand. It also has a feeling of weight that the Primetone doesn't have. I don't understand why I like that, but I do. It's too early in my pick journey to say too much. I just know I like this pick, and with my initials engraved on it, I think it's pretty cool.

    Tried the Others ….I’m Back!

Posted by Jerry Martin on 24th Mar 2025

Been using BC for about 10 yrs now, heard about another maker and decided to give them a try. Pretty good picks , and about the same price. I found they wore quickly, became scratchy after a short time. Tried using them for a couple months, then pick up my old BC picks one day recently and “Walla , the smith sound and speed was back. I have never found a better pick and I have tried many others over the years. I have been using my CT55 and TAD 50 now for a couple of months and regret wasting time and money on the others. I am back for good!!!! Jerry

    Favorite flat-picking pick

Posted by Unknown on 20th Feb 2025

Great for speed, tone, and durability! By far my favorite pick for bluegrass and old time playing on my Martin dread.
