Product Overview

The CT55 is a pick custom designed by Chris Thile for his personal use. It is very similar in size and shape to our TAD line of picks. However it is only manufactured in 55/1000 of an inch(1.4mm) thickness and has a custom bevel per his specifications. This is the exact pick that Chris Thile is currently using. See his thoughts on this pick on our users page.

Quarters, Nickels and Dimes, if included in the pictures, are for size reference only. They are not etched on the picks or included with the sale. To use this reference, please place a coin on your current non-Bluechip pick and then compare to the pictures of our picks with coins on top of them. This will help you choose the pick that is closest to your current favorite size and shape.

    Definitely Worth It

Posted by Mario on 2nd Oct 2013

After playing with Jazz III's for years on electric & acoustic guitars, I had been in the process of switching to a larger pick to be able to really pull sound out of an acoustic instrument before I finally invested in a Blue Chip. That being said, the CT55 is the largest pick I've played with and didn't come without a period of getting used to it. But now that I'm there, its as though some of the things I've been meaning to play (from an improvisational perspective) are no longer lesser approximations and I've actually surprised myself a few times, which is a great sign. The playability of this pick has certainly informed my technique in a new way, so I'm more often executing what's in my head and feel closer to my instrument than ever before! Also, this pick showed up two or three days after I ordered. Great service! Thanks a lot!

    Most versatile pick

The size, hardness, shape, and edge cut make this the most versatile mando pick I've ever used. How nice it would be if I could afford more than one ...

    Superior Pick Quality

    Posted by Craig-O H on 16th Sep 2013

The Bluechip CT55 is the perfect pick for mandolin, it meets the challenge of every gig and increases playability. It has a superior tone to other picks offering a perfect pick to string relationship without feeling cumbersome, thus maximizing the integrity of every musical moment. I love the grip quality of the material. The CT55 is a little lightweight for my guitar playing. I play huge rhythm guitar runs on a D28 through a single band mic in sonically challenging bluegrass situations, so I'll be purchasing either a TAD80 or TAD100 for an added edge on acoustic guitar.

    Worth every penny!

Posted by Ned Pearson on 5th Sep 2013

My CT55 delivers the best tone and response I've ever gotten from my mandolin. Fast off the strings, low resistance, great tone, clear articulation and easy to grip. If you think this is too much to pay for a pick then consider how much you actually spend on picks and it will make sense. Great customer service and fast shipping.

    Simply the best

I was skeptical at first. However, after trying my first Blue Chip Pick a year ago, I now have three because they are simply the best.

Excellent Noticed the improvement as soon as I started using it - no adjustment period needed would have been 5 stars except for the price ! - but I suppose you have to pay for quality.

The Only Pick I Use Now...

Posted by Steve Williams on 23rd Aug 2013

I perform weekends as a solo entertainer on several instruments, and this pick works the best on them all...now I just switch instruments, and not picks also. Guitar, mandolin, plectrum banjo, cigar box guitar and more...this pick does the job for me. I love it.

    Love My CT55

Posted by Tom Galbraith, Fossil Creek Band on 10th Aug 2013

I've tried too many picks to even count, and the Blue Chip pick is by far my favorite! It never hangs up in the strings, produces great tone, and wears like iron. My bandmates commented the first night I used Blue Chip how great my mandolin sounded. I have had my first pick for over two years, and it shows very little (if any) wear. I bought a second CT55 as a backup, and I can't tell the difference in appearance or playability between the new and old picks. I won't play any other pick.

Excellent tone with my new mandolin

Posted by Chris on 5th Aug 2013

Purchased this pick at the same time I 'upgraded' from my 'starter mando' to an Eastman 515. The combination has made a major improvement in tone, and playing. I've swapped back to my old 'Dawg' pick and there is no contest. I'll need to purchase another to make sure I have a spare. Service was excellent, speedy delivery and good communication.
