Product Description

The CT55 is a pick custom designed by Chris Thile for his personal use. It is very similar in size and shape to our TAD line of picks. However it is only manufactured in 55/1000 of an inch(1.4mm) thickness and has a custom bevel per his specifications. This is the exact pick that Chris Thile is currently using. See his thoughts on this pick on our users page.

Quarters, Nickels and Dimes, if included in the pictures, are for size reference only. They are not etched on the picks or included with the sale. To use this reference, please place a coin on your current non-Bluechip pick and then compare to the pictures of our picks with coins on top of them. This will help you choose the pick that is closest to your current favorite size and shape.

  1. Amazing Difference 5 Star Review

Posted by on 13th Jun 2014

I've been using ProPlec and Golden Gate for the past year. However, my new CT55 really amazes me. What a difference in the sound it makes! My hubby was upstairs and heard me play, and said "Now that's better!" Normally, he can't even hear my playing from upstairs. My fellow jammers also noticed the better quality sound right away.
I like how it feels and stays with me even with a loose grip.
The engraving looks great; nice to have it personalized.
    A great product!

  2. Personalization makes great gift item 5 Star Review

Posted by on 9th Jun 2014

I've happily used a blur chip pick after borrowing one and noticing the tone and control available from this material and shaping. Decided to give a couple away (birthday and graduation) to some pickers who might enjoy the very special pick that was personalized for them. It worked. They liked the gifts.

  3. Could a pick make you a better player? 5 Star Review

Posted by on 14th May 2014

Love these picks. Perfect mandolin picks for my hand. Makes me a better player. Love the "heft" and feel of the pick in my hand. Still a beginning student but decided to invest in good picks to enhance my playing experience and it has done just that. Just reordered a few more to have in the lovely pick pouch I also purchased.

  4. best pick ever 5 Star Review

Posted by on 16th Apr 2014

I've been playing and picking my old Martin D28 for over 45 years now, experimenting with lots and lots of different plectrums. Well, Blue Chip CT55 are the very best !!! Great touch, great sound, very well shaped and superb grip.

  5. CT55 is Nice! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 25th Mar 2014

Mando player. Came from using mostly a Wegen 14. Seems easier to control dynamics with this pick (playing pianissimo to forte). Nice touch, nice grip, great sound. I'd like to try a rounded BC but hesitant to drop the cash as I typically don't like the sound I produce with a rounded edge (eg Dawg or Golden Gate).

  6. CT55 Fabulous pick for mandolin 5 Star Review

Posted by on 19th Mar 2014

I originally purchased two blue chip picks and gave one to a friend of mine who also plays mandolin. Then ended up losing the other one I owned. This time I decided to try this particular pick and get another TAD 50 for guitar. I love both of these picks the 55 is perfect for tone on mandolin. I play classic blues from the 20's and 30's and am presently recording and these picks are great for performing and recording. I even have the JD thumbpick that I have managed not to lose. These picks are really fine they never wear out.

  7. My New Favorite Guitar Pick 5 Star Review

Posted by on 17th Mar 2014

When I first decided to try higher quality picks, I overlooked Blue Chip because of the price. Instead, I went with clear acrylic picks, which I liked, but I wore through them rather quickly so I finally decided to give Blue Chip a try after learning how durable they are.

Now that I've played with my CT-55 for a while now, I know I don't have to settle for durability alone. Not only does it not have a single sign of wear (and keep in mind I play with a heavy hand - I was eating through the acrylics in under a month), but it is simply the best sounding pick I've ever used. I used to think the acrylics were the best sounding picks (and I've used hundreds), but when I switched to the CT-55 it was like the whole band kicking in after a vocal break. The midrange just bloomed in a way it had never had before.

I should also mention that these picks somehow stick to your fingers very nicely, and yet they glide across the strings with zero resistance. The amount of control I have with this pick is phenomenal. The speed bevel is perfect. I ordered mine with one rounded corner, and I'm very glad I did. I mostly use the pointed corners, but the rounded edge is perfect for smooth, warm, and delicate playing.

If you're hesitating due to the price - don't. It will pay for itself if you consider the cost of all the other picks you would be chewing through over the life of this pick. When you factor in the incredible tone and control this pick offers, it's more than worth the price. This is my ultimate pick.

  8. CT55 ... best of the bunch! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 25th Feb 2014

For a mandolin, this pick is the best for me. I bought a TD50 at the same time which I like for my guitar work but the CT55 really shines on the mandolin. Extremely fast with no extraneous noise at all. Love it.

  9. Nice pick, different sound. 4 Star Review

It takes time to get accustomed to the sound and the feel of the pick. Day after day I am more satisfied with it.

  10. BlueChip Picks Are A Must For All Musicians 5 Star Review

Posted by on 13th Feb 2014

Having played the guitar for 45 years now I have tried almost every pick on the market. I ordered the CT 55 after hearing wonderful testimonials about this pick. I knew that a good pick makes a huge difference in sound and play ability but never found the perfect pick until I tried the BlueChip CT 55. Ordering was easy and the delivery time was surprisingly fast. Once I picked up my guitar and played a tune with this pick, I just couldn't put it down I played for at least 4 hours just because this pick felt so smooth, and sounded so amazing ! I started telling all of my friends about this pick and even purchased several as gifts. Some may be hesitate because of the price but when you think about it, you may have purchased an expensive instrument or expensive equipment to help you sound good, The pick is the very first contact for your sound once it hits the string. It only makes sense to spend just a little more for a pick that will make all of the difference in your tone and play ability. These BlueChip Picks are A MUST for all musicians! Simply The Best Pick Ever Made! Cheers, Greg Morton
